Unorganised and Unpopular Thoughts on 13 Reasons Why

Image
Warning: This does contain spoilers. Starting as a Netflix hit series, ‘13 Reasons Why’ was quick to come under fire from a range of media outlets and is now deemed heavily controversial. Based on the bestselling novel by Jay Asher, the series focuses on the tale of 17-year-old Hannah Baker, whose life is quick to end for reasons marked across thirteen tapes, which get passed around to who, she states, are the cause of her suicide. With a heavy plot, there’s no wonder the show became so widely discussed; however, it now feels almost tabooed to enjoy or even give praise to the series… but I refuse to let that stop me. Spread across thirteen episodes, the show depicts a steady and harrowing descent into grief and emotional torment, showing relatable, honest characters within a ruthless high-school environment. As far as casting goes, I feel this is one of the strongest set of actors and actresses I am yet to see, with even minor roles being brought to life. Australian newcom...

*SPOILERS* Sherlock - The Six Thatchers Review

Image
It’s safe to say that the past few weeks have caused an emotional whirlwind for Sherlockians everywhere, and today, I feel as though it is finally safe to start discussing the series, spoilers and all. Starting on New Year’s Day, Mark Gatiss’ and Steven Moffat’s brainchild that is Sherlock, made its way back to our screens with an explosive start of Season Four. Starting with bolts of brotherly humour between Sherlock and Mycroft, the series ignored its Christmas Special, ‘The Abominable Bride’, and was situated straight after the end of series three. Although there was a desperate attempt to refer back to ‘His Last Vow’, which graced our screens around three years ago, all links felt a bit lost, unless you had recently re-watched the previous series, which of course I hadn’t had time to do. Titled ‘The Six Thatchers’, playing homage to Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Adventure of the Six Napoleons’, the episode had a high number of expectations and hopes to live up to, and I think ...

Breaking Bad Review (No Spoilers)

Image
Despite its copious amounts of exceptional reviews, it's forever increasing popularity and it's constant mentioning within modern society, for me, Breaking Bad was never a show that I had wanted to see. In my head, I couldn’t help but picture it as another typical American production centred on drugs, which almost guaranteed empty characters, poor scripting, lack of originality and an undeniable glamorisation of drugs, and as a result, I avoided it like the plague for as long as humanly possible. Now, let’s fast-forward a few years to today, when, after constant nagging by my friends, I have finally completed a marathon of the show. Although I am nine years late to the party, it’s safe to say that Breaking Bad is hands down one of the greatest shows I have ever seen, and I am beyond glad that I had the opportunity to binge watch it within a couple of weeks. Vampire Knight Review

Image
I must admit, one I first went to watch the vampire-themed anime Vampire Knight, it was due to my inner teenage girl phase squealing over vampirism. The 19-year-old me was more sceptical; however, I must admit that this show is now a guilty-pleasure. As you can tell from past reviews, I’ve only really watched darker, more serious animes, so when I began to see the over-eccentric nature of Vampire Knight, I was shocked, but also very amused.   The quality of animation throughout this series is pretty high and particularly fluid. Many designs are beautifully gothic, and I personally loved the dark, gothic feel that the series captured throughout. The music was also perfectly thought threw, again capturing an air of classical gothic about it, which just seemed to fully enrich the animation and plot even more. The plot itself is dark and intense, but with that said, it seemed no different to any other romantic drama. Even so, there were still a large number of twists a...

Attack on Titan Review

Image
Whether you watch anime, or you avoid it like the plague, there is no way on this earth that you could not have heard of Attack on Titan but now. It’s a series that everyone rabbits on about, and focuses on the attempt of human survival when overly large, human-eating titans, all of whom have amazing butts, are breaking through protective barriers. Personally, I feel as though this series did not live up to its hype, and I even began to find it a bit dull. The ending was a bit predictable; however, there is no denying that it still had some amazing features. The first episode is a complete hook – in fact, the whole of the first part is. There are great action scenes and an amazing title sequence song, but as soon as the title sequence changed, I felt as though the program digressed. I began to feel an air of predictability about everything, and there is even one twist which I sussed instantly. To most overly intelligent people, that’s okay, but for me, I am never able to s...

Sword Art Online Review

Image
I’m not sure if I have mentioned this briefly in my blog or not, but this year, I have found a new love for anime. Prior to this year, I had no idea what series I should start on or how it works or anything like that; however, I then got Netflix and watched Death Note (Review HERE) and have been trolling through their anime category since. As a result of this, I found the series Sword Art Online, which my boyfriend and I were quick to demolish. The story revolves around the lead character Kirito, who gets trapped in a virtual reality game called Sword Art Online. Within the first episode, a major plot twist is then revealed to him and his fellow gamers, which is that if you die in the game, you die in real life. On top of this, there is now way of logging out of the game, so they are all essentially trapped there until someone completes the final boss battle. The entire concept of this fascinated me, as I love the idea of being trapped within a games world, and on top of thi...

American Horror Story: Asylum

Image
It’s been over three months since I reviewed the first season of American Horror Story (Murder House), so I feel like it’s about time I let you know my thoughts on the second season, American Horror Story: Asylum. It’s been a couple of months since I had actually watched this series, and to be honest, I didn’t plan to review it. Not because it was bad or I hated it, but instead because I enjoyed it so much and binge-watched it in the space of a few days. As a result my review notes only consisted of three words “no like ‘aliens’”, which is not very helpful. So instead of using those notes for this review, I will be using a mixture of my memory and what I’ve re-watched, as at least that way I can point out the either really good, or shockingly awful, parts that stuck with me. Okay, the first thing that took me by surprise when I started watching Asylum, was the fact that it had pretty much the same main casting as Murder House. Apparently everyone but me knew this, but with eac...

From Dusk till Dawn - Season 1 Review

As a vampire lover and Netflix enthusiast, it didn’t take me long to start on the Netflix original series ‘From Dusk till Dawn’. Personally, I had never seen, or even heard, of the original film prior to starting this series, so have no pre-existing knowledge or expectations, and definitely no pre-existing grudges. This seemed to be a rare occurrence in some of the other reviews I had read, and personally felt as though the series deserved its own independent review, as opposed to just another comparison. (I should also add that this review is only in regard to the first series, as that is all I have currently watched). With the exception of the occasional wooden acting from some of the minor characters, the overall performances from the cast were acceptable, and I felt as though the actor’s appearance fitted their roles. The appearances of the modern Gecko brothers was something that I saw being insulted and criticized endlessly because they were “too attractive”; however, I like t...

American Horror Story: Murder House Review

After months of stating I will watch it, I have finally started on American Horror Story! American Horror Story is, essentially, what is says on the tin; an American TV show of thee horror genre. As far as I understand, each series is a standalone and, although the same actors are used, each series  addresses a completely different storyline to the last, so to avoid confusion, this review is only centred on season one; Murder House. Murder House tells the story of a dysfunctional family who, in a desperate attempt to get a fresh start, decide to move house. Little did they know that this house has its own dark and twisted secrets, as well as a history of tortures, death and horrors.  To start with, the whole ‘family moving house’ stereotype drives me insane when it comes to the horror genre. Not only has this cliché been done to death (no pun intended), but it’s also, in my opinion, a bit of a cop out. With that said, it was obviously necessary to start the story, so, I...

Death Note Review

Unfortunately, I can’t use an accent within a blog, due to the fact that you are reading it instead of listening to it (well done, Captain Obvious), but, when I say the words “Death Note”, please read it in a Japanese-y accent. That’s right, I’m reviewing Death Note! (The TV series that is, as that is all which is available on Netflix…) Firstly, Death Note is a Japanese anime which I watched with English subtitles. It was also available as English dubbed, but I found the accents to be too weird and entropic for the character. The plot line is centred on the lead character, Light Yagami, as he aims to cleanse the world of evil using the Death Note. The Death Note is a book which fell to the Human World, and when a person’s name is written in the Death Note they die. Obviously, more rules of the book are explained as the episodes progress and the plot thickens, but due to the fact that many criminals are dying, authorities begin to investigate and call upon a mysterious detective, k...

Orange is the New Black Season 1 Review

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you've probably had at least 60% of your friend and acquaintances demanding that you top what you’re doing to download Netflix, and more importantly, watch ‘Orange is the New Black’. This Netflix original series is essentially the whole reason that I got an account (which I'm sure will now ruin my summer) and after now completing Season 1 in about 3 days, it is safe to say that I certainly wasn't disappointed.   Not only is this series sleek, smart and sexy, it also exhibited the clear, and most vital, characteristic of being easily binge-able. Each episode is heavily intriguing, and leads you wanting more, which is also my prime excuse when people ask me how I watched 13 hours of it in less than three day. The season’s finale is also intense and grasping, making the whole series worthwhile, just for that episode. The script is faultless, particularly for characters like Piper’s boyfriend (Larry). F...

Game of Thrones Review

After a hell-ish holiday, meaning a week of drinking in a different country and suffering the possibility of the world falling out of my arsehole, I am finally up-to-date with the American fantasy-drama, Game of Thrones. After months of saying that I will catch up with the programme, I finally got around to it, and have finished it in around a three week time frame, due to the fact that I was completely hooked. Due to the number of characters and their complex names, I do struggle to remember what each of them are called, so the detail within this review will be lacking, but come on, who calls their child Daenerys or Ygritte?! Back to the point of this, it's a difficult series to review, largely due to the number of twists and, to be frank, deaths that occur in each episode, let alone each series. From season 1, we are introduced to several different protagonists, all of whom are seeming to participate in their own story lines, which do still contribute to the larger plot. Obviousl...
